Written and illustrated by Karuho Shiina and published by Shueisha, the Kodansha Manga Award winner follows the story of high school outcast Kuronuma Sawako, who is popularly known among her schoolmates as "Sadako," the main antagonist in The Ring franchise, and Kazehaya Shota, a kind and pleasant high schooler who often approaches Sawako without hesitation.

The manga gets a new live-action adaptation 13 years after the first live-action movie came out. Tabe Mikako and the late Miura Haruma played Kuronuma Sawako and Kazehaya Shota respectively in the 2010 version distributed by Toho. The movie proved to be a box-office hit, earning approximately $18.1 million.
